CMOs that are in the arena - this is for you

Going from running marketing teams as a CMO at both VC and PE-backed companies to building a consulting practice, it's been interesting to see the advice that agencies give to marketers who are in the arena.


There are a lot of great agencies out there who add tremendous value to their clients. I've had the pleasure of working with several over the years.


Having been client-side my entire career, I want to take the best of my agency and consulting experiences and apply those learnings to my clients. To me, this means:


Listening to my clients and understanding what their biggest challenges are.

Not assuming any one narrative is the magic bullet for their specific issues.


Respecting their privacy.

Not posting about what we talk about online.


Getting to know my client as people, not just transactional relationships.

This also speaks to the first two points above.


Aligning our incentives so that we win together.

I believe in win-win business outcomes and I know they are possible.


Building radical candor into the relationship.

So we can make a positive impact on the business in a transparent way.
